Species: Black Crow (carrion crow)

The black crow, also known as the carrion crow due to its tendency to scavenge off animal carcasses (carrion), is a common sight in cities and rural settings across Europe. It can be distinguished from other members of the Corvus genus by its size – ranging from 48-52 cm in length, it is smaller then the raven (>60cm); and, colour of its plumage – black with a greenish blue sheen compared to the grey feathering of the closely-related hooded crow. In addition to feeding on carrion black crows also eat insets, worms, seeds, fruit and occasionally small mammals and amphibians.

There is more information about the black or carrion crow (Corvus corone) available on the website of the RSPB.
