Species: Red deer
Red deer (Cervus elaphus) are the largest members of the deer family found in the Netherlands. Unlike roe deer which are found throughout the Netherlands, the populations of red deer are limited to the National parks of the Veluwe, Oostvaardersplassen and the Weerterbos with occasional sightings reported from along the border with Germany.
A doe (female) weighs on average 55-100kg whilst the stags (males) typically weigh between 95 and 200kg. Only the males grow antlers and these are annually grown and shed. Red deer live in groups known as herds.
