Disease: Proteus spp.

Proteus spp. bacteria belong to the enterobacteriaceae family of bacteria and are found  in dead and decomposing organic matter including leaf litter and animal feces. Some Proetus species such as P. vulgaris, are commensals, living in the gut flora of many animal species. They are opportunistic pathogens causing sporadic cases of disease when the body’s defenses are breached.

Pathogen

Proteus spp. is een bacterie die veelvuldig in het milieu voorkomt (bodem, water en mest) en maken onderdeel uit van de normale maagdarmkanaal flora [1, 4]. Het zijn opportunistische ziekteverwekkers, hetgeen betekent dat deze bacteriën bij gezonde mensen en dieren meestal geen ziekte veroorzaken. Als opportunistische ziekteverwekker wordt Proteus spp. geassocieerd met urineweginfecties met complicaties, en soms met bacteriemie (bacteriën in de bloedbaan)[1, 4], wondinfectie of meningitis [2, 3].
