De bacterie Brucella suis serotype 2 werd recent (6 mei 2013) vastgesteld in twee wilde zwijnen uit Limburg met PCR1. De herkomst van de besmetting, de eerste in Nederland sinds lange tijd, is niet bekend.

Brucella suis serotype 2 besmetting wordt in Europa wel vaker bij wilde zwijnen aangetoond, en het is de afgelopen jaren voorgekomen in België, Duitsland en Frankrijk2. In besmette zwijnen zijn soms abcessen waar te nemen, vooral in de voortplantingsorganen, en er kan abortus optreden. Maar de bacterie kan ook in wilde zwijnen voorkomen zonder dat er met het blote oog afwijkingen waar te nemen zijn3. Brucella suis serotype 2 is niet sterk zoönotisch en ziekte bij de mens is zeldzaam4. De bacterie is elders in Europa ook af en toe in hazen (Lepus europeaus) aangetoond.
